Specialist tuck pointing London

Tuck pointing is one of the most skilled and time-consuming techniques in traditional brickwork. Very few people do it properly. Here’s what it is.

Specialist tuck pointing on Georgian property, London

Tuck pointing was developed in the 18th century to make ordinary brickwork look like the expensive fine-jointed brick used on the grandest buildings. The method involves filling the whole joint with coloured mortar that matches the brick, then scribing a thin line of white or cream lime putty down the centre. From a few feet away the wall appears to have immaculate 5mm joints.

Done well, it’s extraordinary. Done badly — or done with the wrong materials — it looks terrible and causes damage. I’ve seen Victorian tuck pointing that’s still in decent condition after 150 years. I’ve also seen modern attempts that have failed within a decade.

I’m one of a small number of contractors in London who can carry out this work to a standard worth having. I won’t rush it and I won’t cut corners on the materials.

  • One of very few London contractors with genuine tuck pointing experience
  • Traditional lime putty and fine sand specification throughout
  • Right for Georgian, Regency and early Victorian rubbed brick facades
  • Experience with listed buildings and English Heritage requirements
  • I won’t take on jobs I can’t do properly

“Chris at London Brickwork Repointing repointed the front of my house in N16. Three reasons why I’d use him again: he is highly experienced and skilled, he’s careful, helpful and trustworthy, and he gets the job done at a fair price. Rare to get all three these days!”

Frequently asked questions

It's a two-stage process. First the joint is filled flush with mortar tinted to match the brick colour. Then a fine raised line of white or cream lime putty — about 3 to 5mm wide — is scribed along the centre. The effect from a distance is of very precise, thin joints.
Tuck pointing is most appropriate for Georgian and Regency rubbed brick facades and some early Victorian properties. I'll tell you honestly when I visit.
Significantly more than standard repointing — it's very labour intensive. Priced on inspection.
